“Before landing my role on Pretty Little Liars, I had a modeling contract in Thailand and Hong Kong. While there, I saw local girls with guys who were way older and I knew something just wasn’t right. Then I learned that nearley two million people under 18 across the globe like them are being forced into prostitution. Disgusted, I contacted the Somaly Mam Foundation (SMF), a nonprofit cofounded by a survivor of sex slavery in Cambodia. It rescues girls and helps them deal with issues like pregnancy and injuries caused by abuse, and teaches them how to earn a living. I flew to Cambodia for one week last February to meet survivors in SMF shelters and schools who were learning how to speak English, sew, and cut hair. I brought them books and asked what else they needed. They said, “Don’t judge us. Just give us love. sister.” One girl wouldn’t let go of my hand for hours. When they hugged me, it was the purest love I’ve ever felt. I want to help SMF open more shelters and schools in the Philippines, since I’m half Filipina, and sex trafficking is a problem there, too.”
Shay Mitchell is one of those people that if you tried to hate her, you’d find that it is absolutely impossible.

Most people will agree that rape isn’t a joking matter and should be taken seriously, but do they really believe that? I recently got into an exchange of words with a man who thought it was okay to joke about raping women because he himself is not a rapist. Because he had never raped a woman or would ever rape a woman, when he joked about raping a woman it was okay, because its just words.. not actions.
I don’t identify myself as being a feminist, but it doesn’t take a feminist to know that joking about rape excuses and normalizes the behavior. Maybe you don’t actually think raping people is okay.. but does that show when you’re joking about forcing a broomstick up someones ass? Why take it so seriously you say? Because, you’re just adding to the rape culture that is present in our society. How do you explain to a man that joking about rape isn’t funny? You say you would never rape a woman and argue that you shouldn’t be chastised for joking about rape because its just something you and your friends do. But that’s just it. How much better are you than someone who actually commits the crime or approves of the crime?
I found this great article about it http://www.menspeakup.org/why-rape-jokes-are-never-ok
Needless to say, I think this friendship has ran its course. I can’t deal with ignorance. It would be a different story if he acknowledged the fact that it is wrong, or showed any remorse and an effort to at least try to stay away from rape jokes. Unfortunately, some people just don’t understand that what they do and say can affect others more than they think.
Gettin all deep and philosophical on a Saturday afternoon. ;P
